Masafumi Take and Kannabi’s newly launched Katharsis Recordings readies its second release featuring leftfield techno tracks from themselves, O-Ma and Ryogo Yamamori.

Starting life as a party at Contact in Tokyo, in 2017 Katharsis evolved into a label with early support from the likes of the influential DJ Nobu. Now it is back with a superb second EP that features four talented Japanese artists and once again oozes class with each producer offering distinct musical identities that represent the best of modern techno from the Far East.
Label head Masafumi Take has run his own nights for years and gained international recognition for his DJ sets. His brilliant ‘Mikuni Kaido’ combines nostalgic arps and analogue bass - it’s supple and delicate in its melodies, resulting in a truly unique atmosphere. Having appeared on French label Otium, modular synth enthusiast O-Ma’s sound mixes up jungle, IDM and ambient. His excellent ‘Kirisame’ is seven psychedelic minutes of spacious and all-consuming techno with ethereal pads and gurgling machines drifting above floaty drums to beautiful effect.
Katharsis Recordings co-founder Kannabi steps up with ‘Shoka’. It’s an icy deep techno cut with muted but punchy drums and the hum and static of electricity adds texture to the groove. Rhythmic and slow to evolve, it is a real mental trip. Finally, ‘Yoake’ by Ovum producer Ryogo Yamamori, who has been respected in Japan since the 90s thanks to his own 951beat label, delivers a rolling beat with spacey- synth sounds that gradually builds to a climax making this trippy track perfect for the dance floor.
